Aural Workshop Modes

Modes are basically different types of scale. There are seven common modes (plus many other less common ones).

Below you will find links to over 40 different ear training modes tests.

Each of these aural tests contains 10 questions and at the end of each test you will be given a mark and a percentage. Feel free to repeat each of the tests as many times as you wish.

In this beginner section, you will be tested on only the three major modes - Ionian, Lydian and Mixolydian. The questions are selected at random and can be in any key.

Use the following ear training hints to help you recognise the major modes:

LISTEN	Modes	HINT
	Ionian	This is simply a major scale.
	Lydian	This is the same as a major scale except the 4th note is sharpened (i.e. the 4th note sounds incorrect)
	Mixolydian	This is the same as the major scale except the 7th note is flattened. (i.e. the 7th note sounds incorrect)
