Aural Workshop Modes

Modes are basically different types of scale. There are seven common modes (plus many other less common ones).

Below you will find links to over 40 different modes tests.

Each of these tests contains 10 questions and at the end of each test you will be given a mark and a percentage. Feel free to repeat each of the tests as many times as you wish.

In this advanced section, you will be tested on all seven of the common modes - Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian & Locrian.
The questions are selected at random and can be in any key.

Use the following hints to help you recognise the modes:

LISTEN	Modes	HINT
	Ionian	This is simply a major scale.
	Lydian	This is the same as a major scale except the 4th note is sharpened (i.e. the 4th note sounds incorrect)
	Mixolydian	This is the same as the major scale except the 7th note is flattened. (i.e. the 7th note sounds incorrect)
	Dorian (minor mode)	This is simply a natural minor scale but with the 6th note sharpened.
	Aeolian (minor mode)	This is simply a natural minor scale.
	Phrygian (flat 2nd mode)	This mode is the same as a natural minor scale but the 2nd note is flattened.
	Locrian (flat 2nd mode)	This scale is the least normal sounding. All of the notes apart from the 1st and 4th are flattened.
